Table & Applicator
powder-coated steel, pvc pipe, finishing paste wax
Finish Line is an oak coffee table and oversized Chapstick applicator filled with Minwax paste finishing wax. The legs of the coffee table are hand formed, welded, and powder coated. Interested in the connection between referring to a part of a piece of furniture as legs and using objects to describe certain categories of queerness as in the terms chapstick lesbian or lipstick lesbian, this piece dissects layers of relationships between language, object, person, function, and objectification.
The action in the table’s legs suggests motion, perhaps the crossing of a finish line, the finish line of the completion of the project? the completion of 17 years of education? Could it be argued the table is not actually finished because the line of finish on its surface is not evenly buffed in?
