Plywood, cement, steel, rope, linoleum, poplar
Dispensable is an installation composed of a cast cement wedge, hand formed and sharpened steel hooks, dispensers made of plywood and linoleum, poplar and plywood turned bottles, and rope.
Thinking about the language of dispense and suspend such as in, “suspend your belief,” or, “make yourself indispensable,” Dispensable seeks to physicalize the relationships between the way we speak about objects and the way we speak about ourselves and one another.
The cement wedge is a counterweight to the suspending of the seemingly invisible… how heavy are our beliefs? How difficult is it to suspend them? The modified tape, ticket, and toilet paper dispensers neutralize scale and function, all performing the same task of suspending vessels incapable of holding or pouring, are they dispensers made dispensable?
Dispensable was installed for the Alliance Series exhibition at Ballroom Projects in Chicago, IL.
